Leigh Sales wins George Munster Journalism Award for Detainee 002 The case of David Hicks
ABC National Security Correspondent, Leigh Sales, has won the 2007 George Munster Award for independent journalism, for her book Detainee 002 The case of David Hicks.
Based on over five years of research, Leigh Sales details the Hicks story from his childhood through to his trial earlier this year. As well as the legal and civil liberties issues raised by his case, she considers whether the pragmatic politics of his continued detention without trial worked for the Coalition Government, and comes to the conclusion of a 'resounding no'. Australian Centre for Independent Journalism (ACIJ) Director Chris Nash said that Leigh Sales won the award for her assiduous investigation, the quality of her writing and balanced reporting.
The 2007 George Munster Award was given to Leigh on September 14 at the University of Technology, Sydney. A panel discussion 'From the Tampa via Hicks to Haneef: have the politics of fear lost their bite?' followed the award presentation. Speakers included Leigh Sales, critic and commentator, Michael Duffy, and barrister Bret Walker SC.
People can listen to the Munster forum at 5pm on Sunday 23 September on ABC Radio National at www.abc.net.au/rn/bigideas/.
