Sub Editing Fundamentals

This course covers the essentials of sub editing, proofreading, layout and design for print publications. Topics covered include: understanding your readers, story selection, copy editing, news and feature stories, writing headlines and captions, marking copy, proofreading and avoiding defamation and contempt.  Basic concepts of page layout and design using inDesign the new industry standard will also be covered. 

The course lecturer is Annette Blackwell, who was the former Sydney Bureau Chief at Australian Associated Press (AAP) and now works as a full-time academic in Journalism at UTS.   Annette was the Editor of the Irish Echo, a national tabloid newspaper for the Irish Australian community. Prior to coming to Australia in 1991 she worked for 10 years for Independent Newspapers PLC in Dublin. The Independent is Ireland's main newspaper group.  In Australia, Annette has worked as a casual sub-editor for Good Weekend magazine, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian Consolidated Press for Women's Weekly.

People who edit articles, put together newsletters or magazines and/or need to learn about the role of a sub editor or those wanting to freelance will benefit from attending.

1.    21, 22, 23, 24 April - 9.30am to 4.30pm over four days - Monday to Thursday

2.    22, 23, 24, 25 July - 9.30am to 4.30pm over four days - Tuesday to Friday

3.    18, 19, 20, 21 November - 9.30am to 4.30pm over four days - Tuesday to Friday
